About This Statue
Shakyamuni Gautama, the historical Buddha and the Awakened One of our age, is depicted here in his majestic crowned form, seated at the supreme moment of enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya. Adorned with the royal ornaments of a bodhisattva yet anchored in the stillness of realisation, this crowned Shakyamuni statue unites temporal majesty with timeless compassion.
Standing 52 cm tall and weighing 14.16 kg, this is a substantial altar centrepiece of genuine physical presence, formed in solid copper and finished in 24K gold plating, with hand-set coral, lapis lazuli, and conch shell inlay across the crown, throne, jewellery, and alms bowl. Its dimensions of 52 x 34 x 26 cm make it a commanding focal point worthy of the most considered devotional or display space.

Iconography and Deep Symbolism
-
Crowned Form of Shakyamuni Buddha: In most Tibetan Buddhist imagery, Shakyamuni appears in the simple robes of a wandering monk. This crowned form presents him in a more exalted way, honouring him as both spiritual sovereign and fully awakened Buddha. The ornate crown, detailed with coral, lapis lazuli, conch shell and imitation turquoise, highlights the radiant and limitless nature of his enlightenment.
-
The Bhumisparsha Mudra – The Earth Touching Gesture: is formed by the right hand descending gracefully over the knee, fingertips directed toward the ground. This gesture recalls the moment Shakyamuni summoned the earth goddess Vasundhara to bear witness to his enlightenment, affirming the merit of countless lifetimes as the very ground of his awakening.
-
The Alms Bowl: Cradled in his left hand resting in his lap is a ritual alms bowl, symbolising the Buddha’s renunciation of worldly life, his humility, and his compassionate dependence on the generosity of lay practitioners. It is a reminder of the simplicity and purity at the heart of the Buddhist path.
-
The Ushnisha and Urna: Shakyamuni’s tightly curled hair rises to a pointed flame finial, the ushnisha, representing his transcendent wisdom and enlightened consciousness. Between his brows rests the urna, a small circular mark symbolising his ability to perceive all realms of existence with perfect clarity.
-
The Double Lotus Throne: the statue rests upon an elaborate double-tier lotus pedestal whose sweeping petals are richly inlaid with coral, lapis lazuli, imitation turquoise, and conch shell. The lotus, rising unstained from the muddy depths, is the enduring symbol of enlightenment — the capacity of the mind to blossom in pure awareness regardless of conditions.
- Mantra Inscription: encircling the base in raised Tibetan script is the mantra of Shakyamuni Buddha: Om Muni Muni Maha Munaye Svaha, meaning “Hail to the Sage, the Sage, the Great Sage.” Its continuous presence around the base consecrates the object and invites the practitioner’s recitation into every encounter with the statue.
Artisanal Excellence
Every surface of this statue bears witness to the living tradition of Newari metalwork, refined over generations in the ateliers of the Kathmandu Valley. Formed in solid copper by master craftsmen, the body is enveloped in rich 24K gold plating, warm and luminous in the changing light of a devotional space. Artisans then hand-chase the entire surface of the robe with dense scrollwork and intricate floral motifs, a process demanding days of patient, devoted focus on each individual piece. Coral, lapis lazuli, and conch shell are individually hand-set across the crown, throne, jewellery, and bowl rim. The face is brought to life using the traditional gold powder painting technique, each brow, eye, and lip rendered by a single skilled hand working in centuries-old devotion to the craft.
Caring for Your Statue
-
Placement: Keep in a clean, dry location, away from direct sunlight or extreme humidity, to preserve the gold-plated finish.
-
Cleaning: Gently wipe the statue with clean, dry cotton. Do not use water, polishes, or any cleaning chemicals, as these may damage the gold plating and fine details. Coarse materials or rough handling could dull or scratch the surface.
-
Stability: Ensure the statue is positioned securely — at 14.16 kg, stability is essential and it should not be placed where it could be toppled or knocked.
-
Handling: Lift carefully from the base with both hands. Avoid pressure on the crown, hands, bowl, ears, ornaments and other delicate raised details.
-
Storage: If not displayed, store wrapped in soft cloth in a dry place to reduce tarnish and surface marks.
